First Pre-Trip Service Event - Young Scholars Frederick Douglass Charter School
Last week, on October 24, we had the pleasure of hosting 10 students from Young Scholars Frederick Douglass Charter School. The students, accompanied by their teacher Ms. Xu and school social worker Mr. Carden, were able to take a tour of the campus, eat lunch at the South Campus Diner, and hang out with TEAM PHILLY participants in the Jiminez Room of Stamp.
The Visitor's Center started the day off right by showing us an inspirational video; one that made me proud to be a Terp and one that I hope impacted the Frederick Douglass students as well. Here is a link to the video. It's worth the watch:

After a quick tour of campus that included a stop at the ODK Fountain, McKeldin Library, the Point of Failure (which garnered more than a few curious questions from the Frederick Douglass students), Knight Hall, and Cole Field House, we headed straight to the South Campus Diner for lunch. Dining Services graciously donated Terp Dollar cards for each of our visitors, providing a no-cost lunch option for them. The students loved having their own card to use, and it was cool to watch them get a taste (literally... sorry that was a really bad pun) of what college is like.
After lunch we headed to Stamp for the main event: meeting up with Team Philly '13. We started by talking in small groups, giving us as participants a chance to get to know these students, and giving them a chance to get to know us as well. The hope was that a little dialogue would jumpstart their desire to ask us questions so that we could really help them get the most information out of their college visit.
Turns out they didn't need much jumpstarting. These students were sharp, and they weren't afraid to ask about anything and everything they were curious about. Our team of participants did an amazing job fielding the questions, always providing clear and extensive explanations of the topic. Some of the questions asked dealt with terminology ("What are credits?"), how to choose a major, types of majors, types of classes, resident life, and extracurricular/on campus activities. It really seemed like the Frederick Douglass students could see themselves attending UMD someday, and that was such a positive thing for me to have taken away from the event. Instilling the mere sense of possibility with these students is often half of the battle. It was clear that these students knew it was possible, and that they were committed to making it reality.
We all got our first taste of what the rest of this AB experience has in store for us. Working with members of the community we will be serving was an excellent way to introduce ourselves to the social issue we are studying this year. Our further exploration of this topic as the year progresses will yield even more understanding of urban education, and now that we have personal experiences with members of this community it is my hope that our understanding will be put into better context.
Kudos to everyone involved with this awesome pre-trip service event. It was a positive experience all around, and our work last week has left me so optimistic about the rest of our AB adventure.

Welcome Team Philly!
Hey there Team Philly!
This our first post on our very own blog, dedicated to our experiences over the next year as we embark on our ASB trip to Philadelphia. This is our place to communicate what we have learned, our questions, concerns, and anything else that comes to us. We will be using it here and there before our trip and after. Most of our posting will take place over the course of the trip itself. Each day, several members of our group will be responsible for posting to this blog. At the end of the trip, we will be able to look back and see what people were saying/thinking at the start of the week, and how that evolved towards the end of the trip.
It is going to be a great way to help organize our thoughts, and we hope it becomes a real learning resource for everyone.
Please post anything you feel (within reason of course)! If you have any thoughts on the trip as of now, don't be afraid to jot them down on here. If you have any resources you want the whole group to see, this would be the place!
This blog is going to be whatever we make of it, so let's make it something great!

PS - Yes that is Rocky in the background. Yes we are going to try and go to the Rocky steps. Yes it does feel amazing to run up them. Yes it does make you wish that your life had a soundtrack. Yes, although unrelated, Rocky will become necessary viewing material before we leave for spring break.
